I have an order for a possum cake that will feed approx 100 people. The possum can't be road kill. Gotta love us southeners. I was thinking of the possum on top of a layered sheet cake. Haven't really done a lot of carved cakes so I need some help icon_cry.gif

Oh lordy, so many comments come to mind about possum cake but I'll just stop before I start LOL

well I typed in possum in yahoo image search, and sorry to say, lots of roadkill pics- let me brainstorm on that one a bit more- there must be something creative you could do with that one LOL

are you SURE they insisted on possum and not open to ideas? lol

Do a sheet cake ... either two 12x18s put together as one or stacked into a layer cake in order to feed 100. Draw the animal in a tree or something on top. (unless they specified 3-D.)

Even though it is pronounced possum, it is spelled opossum. Do an image search spelling it that way and you might find better pics.

Here is a coloring page that might be easy to copy.

Oops, I gave the wrong link:

Although, I like pictures of them hanging upside down by the tail. Maybe you could search for that.

This is not really any "help" here--just a bit of ummm...embarrasment and fun. icon_redface.gif

Now, Y'all have to remember--before I tell this, I do 98% cheesecakes, and wedding cakes. Celebrations, birthdays, etc., are not really my forte. Ok. So, like "drawing," "letters," "writing," are NOT my thing, and I suck BIG TIME at those types of cakes.

My husband's nickname is "Possum." Noone at the dep't even knows him hardly by his real name. Anyway--Father's day--and I decide to do a cake for him. icon_razz.giftapedshut.gif

Really hard, because he's only going to be gone for like 2 hours, and I've got a house full of teenagers--all boys who've never seen anyone do anything remotely involving a cake or decorating it. icon_wink.gif

So I whip up the frosting and bake the 9x13. Mix all the colors and whip out the decorating bags and tips. I had decided to do a possum hanging in a tree (something they don't actually do, by the way--that's an old cartoon adage) with two other "little" possums hanging beside it. The saying was going to be, "You're a great dad to hang out with!"

Yeah. Well, the tree turned out really nicely. I used the basket-weave tip for the bark, and of course the leaves were fine, too--very full. I thought I'd outline the big possum with a writing tip and fill him in with "fur" using the grass tip. In theory--this is all great. Yeah. Just to remind you--there's a table full of 13 year olds surrounding me at this point.

So the tree starts to take shape, and then come the possums--which would be wonderful, if I just knew how to DRAW A POSSUM!!! icon_twisted.giftapedshut.gif

So, I finish up the big one, and the boys are saying things like, "What is that supposed to be?!" "That doesn't really look like a possum, Mrs. E!"
Yeah...really bolstered my confidence there.

So the old man comes home after work, and the house is clean. Laundry's done. Extra kids are gone. His gifts and cake are waiting for him on the dining room table. Yeah.

And he says, "Why did you make me a cake with HORNETS NESTS? And why do HORNETS NESTS want to 'hang out' with ME?!?" icon_redface.gificon_cry.gificon_redface.gif

Thought Y'all might like that.

oops I just realized while you're sayin possum, I'm thinking armadillo. So watching Steel Magnolias won't help ya much lol. Still don't understand why someone would want either for a cake, but I'm not from the south, just southern Indiana lol.

Knox, that's funny! You don't have a picture of the cake? Also, it's a really cute idea with the words and all. I didn't know that it was not true that opossum don't hang by their tails!

I can't stop laughing!!! That is totally hysterical!!

I wish I could help with the opposum cake idea but only to try and carve it or draw it.

Please let us see a picture when it's finished.

My sis and I were talking about cakes the other day and I showed her the road kill possum cakes on this site. She wants one for her daughter's b-day in Dec. Lisa is scared stiff (hee hee) of possums for some reason. Well not scared, they just give her a serious case of creepy shivers at the mention of the word possum. LOL Sister's sil says Lisa wouldn't eat it. I finally told my sis she'd have to try and make it cause I only do pretty cakes. A joke would be cute but if it's make her run shivering from the room that's no fun, especially for the decorator in the family, ME.
Good luck with your possum quest!

icon_surprised.gificon_smile.gif Dang! That's a GREAT LOOKING possum!

Wish I could make one like that...wonder which pan they used for him?

Maybe they rounded out a loaf-shaped cake? And then a small ball for the head? Wonder how they did the tail and arms?

Hmmm...dreaming now.

Glad Y'all liked the possum cake story. No--no pics of it--TOO EMBARASSED!! icon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif I could have posted it in "Post your worst cake," though.

Thanks everyone. It needs to be a 3-d possum. I really liked the one from the Wilton Contest. Wonder what pans they used and the face is really done great!

LOL, I'm kind of sick and twisted like this, but just imagine if the inside of it was full of red food coloring, LOL. I remember this one movie from a while back when I was a kid (can't remember the name of it), the groom's cake was an alligator or a croc and it was red velvet on the inside of it. I just remember thinking how cool was that. icon_biggrin.gif
