OK, my big question. How do you figure out how far apart to space stripes or diamonds or whatever so that they are equal all the way around?
Every time I do this I have one section that is either a little further or a little closer than all he others.

Do you have a cake divider set? They come in different forms. You will need to determine which one you need based on if you have a circle or square cake. This insures that all of the divisions are perfectly spaced. This is what I would use. Some people can just eye it and get it perfect but I use the dividers.
A couple of times I used a piece of paper the size of the cake and folded it, then unfolded it and followed the creases. it's crude; but it worked for what i needed.
Don't have the divider set, have to look into that. The paper idea is a good one. I'll check that out.
Thanks both of you for answering.
When I measure for my swags I take a piece of calculator tape measure it around the cake and then fold it into as many sections as I need and if I am going to scroll the curve for the swag I will cut out a half circle in the folded tape.
Hope that made sense.

Thats how you know where the back of the cake is
