How do I make a 3-d wire basket on top of a cake? What would I use to do this? It needs to look like a golf basket. something like this but smaller.

well, here's the real deal

OUCH! on the price.

I dare say the decorator somehow got hold of a real one and just mounted on the cake.

other than that -- would have a large central dowel and then a way to connect a ring from which would hang chains gathered at bottom.

Can you make something similuar out of gum paste or fondant?

the chains most likely.

the upright support -- possibly, but a dowel would be easier and sturdier.

the ring at top -- doubtful as would be fragile and most likely wouldn't support the weight.

------

even the pros have to use non-edible materials sometimes -- so we can too!

They do make that chain in plastic. You would have to paint it silver. They make spraypaint for plastics. If macrame' was still the rage you would have no problem finding hoops. Maybe you could use the center of a larger embroider hoop. They come in plastic and wood. The plastic ones are thicker and would be stronger. It is just a thought.
