Hey everyone. So my cousin needs to make a Coliseum cake for school for Extra credit and she asked my mom for help. SO mom turned to me. Does anyone have any ideas on how they can make this cake? My cousin is only 12, so nothing too difficult (even though mom will be there to help).
Thanks and have a good day.

Bake it in an angel food cake pan! Then all she has to do is ice the solid cake, without having to carve it out into its shape.

Angel food cake pan? Is that the round pan with the hole in the middle?

Yes, that's the one. It would be the same round shape with the open middle of the Coliseum in Rome.

You could make the hole in the middle slightly larger by carving it...though I wouldn't go too big or the thinner sides might crack and fall down. You could ice on the curved arches, or even cut the shapes from fondant and stick them on instead.

erinlynn22, I know it has been a year since this post, but I need to make the same cake. Did you actually make a Colisseum cake and do you have pics and/or pointers?

On this site, under "articles", is a tutorial on how to make a whimsical house. She actually states in the tutorial that the way you cut the layers for a whimsical cake look like a coliseum. Try looking there, there are great pictures to help you out.

Also, try to google Coleseum cake or stadium cake. I know there is a college out there with pictures of a humongous coliseum cake with step by step pictures of the cakes in progress. It may inspire her!

Sorry, the tutorial is on whimsical CAKES-not houses. I have my own post with birdhouses going - so I have "Houses" on the brain. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks, imagecakes! That article was very helpful and I think I can make a cake in the shape of the collosseum now, but I'm still not sure how to create the arches and columns and make it look good. Does anyone have a good idea?

I would frost it smooth....then just paint the columns and all on there. I think that would look really cool!

Cheers,
Shirley

I think your best bet would be to pipe them on with icing. Measure your rows with a ruler first to make sure you stay level all around. Use a wide round tip for the columns and a small round to outline the arches. Different shades of icing to make each piece distinctive might add some depth to it.
