Fondant Buttons

I'm seeing all of these cute cakes with fondant buttons on them. How do I make them? Are they just molded by hand or is there an easier way? Thanks so much!

I seem to remember a baby shower cake with them in 2006 Wilton Yearbook. I don't have it infront of me but if you want me to look it up I can.

the easiest way is to cut a round shape and push a button into it : ) For a better effect you could also poke the button's holes with a toothpick.

I made a cake with candy clay buttons, but it should be the same for fondant. I rolled little balls, then made the indentation with the cap-end of my chapstick (it was a brand that had a crisp edge and was smooth all across the top). The size worked well for me. To poke the holes I used the blunt end of a "fancy" toothpick. lol, that's what I call them anyway. They're the round kind you get at a restaurant that has one end flat with little ridges around them. See my pics icon_smile.gif

I've never tried fondant yet, so I used the candy clay because I didnt' want something that made a big recipe. I only made a half-batch and ended up with tons of buttons (which I gave away). The texture of it is like soft clay, and I needed to use powdered sugar to dust my hands while rolling the balls. Not sure how fondant feels, but the candy clay seemed to get soft from the heat of my hands. Hope that helps!

Oh I forgot to mention that since the candy clay is made from white chocolate candy melts the result will be more of an off-white. You'll never get a pure white using it, so if you need white buttons I'd stick with the fondant.

Thanks for the tip! So did you use the colored candy melts or color it yourself? I'm assuming you can do either. Also, does the candy clay harden to where you can store them in advance from when I need them for the cake?

I used white candy melts and added just a touch of regular paste coloring. You're "supposed" to use the candy colors (oil-based), but for pastels the icing colors are okay. If you're going for a darker color, I'd go with the candy colors because the paste could cause the clay to have a bad texture or separate since it's water-based. I made my buttons about a week in advance and put them in a jelly-roll pan and covered with Press-n-seal wrap. They get firm enough to pick up and place on your cake, but still soft enough to bite into.
