I am making a JoJo cake for a friends daughter's 3rd b-day.
I have only made one fondant figure before...for my own son's 3rd b-day and I wasn't too picky about it. However, for this one...every little crinkle is bugging me. I am not done yet and cake isn't needed til the weekend.
Can anyone tell me how to avoid this, fix it, why its happening and
last...does using gumpaste or 1/2 gumpaste/fondant keep this from happening? I have never used gumpaste before but am curious enough to try if it works better.
Thanks.
I FEEL YOUR PAIN as I am making fondant figures for my water slide cake. I find that when it cracks it's because I have left it out uncovered for too long. So cover with saran wrap and use crisco to soften up the cracks. It works for me. Best of luck to you!
trying to add picture...not working for me.
so ..couple more questions..
What do I use to keep it from getting sticky? I have been using powdered sugar...is that why it is cracking?
I just moved the leg to add a foot and it totally got all cracky so I guess I have to start over.... ![]()
Would it help if I got some gumpaste and did a mix of 1/2 and 1/2? Never worked with gumpaste before though.
I am only new here, yet have worked with a lot of fondant. To stop the fondant from going sticky, use corn flour (corn starch). As for stopping it from cracking, usually it is because you have worked the fondant too much and it needs to be softened a lot before you begin to work with it again. Dont throw it out, as it can be reused.
HTH
I use shortening to stop the cracking. I'm with mrssambo don't throw it out it can be reused. I do not add more powdered sugar to stop the stickiness, I use the shortening. I know that doesn't make sense but that is what has worked for me. All you can do is try at this point and see what works better for you and let us know. Best of luck!
