Wedding Location 200 Miles Away, Can I Do It?

My stepson and future daughter-in-law have just asked me if I would make their wedding cake next June. Catch is the wedding is 200 miles away from where I live and we are going the day before.
I have never made a "wedding cake" before but have done stacked cakes with boards and dowels, etc. so I'm not too afraid of the cake itself, just how best to accomplish getting it to the reception without ending up in the disasters forum, LOL.
Does anyone have any ideas how best to accomplish this?
Would it be better to dowel and stack them or use some kind of separators or something? I think the bride would be open to making it easiest for me.
I was thinking of baking cakes here and freezing and then transporting frozen so they would be thawed when I got there. I could make fillings ahead of time and put in an ice chest, but I would need to assemble, decorate, etc. on Friday and deliver to the reception hall on Saturday. I don't think I could decorate at the hall because I would be a nervous wreck.
Think it can be done in a hotel room if I find a room that has a refrigerator? I really want to do it for them because I love them but I don't want to ruin their wedding, either. And hubby's ex will be there so you know I want it to be FABULOUS! ![]()

I'd love to hear any ideas or suggestions to make this work.
I took a cake from PA to North Carolina for a good friend of mine. (It's the beach themed wedding cake in my photos.) I baked the cakes here and decorated the entire thing in a hotel room in NC.
I did not have a filling, so there was no issue with needing a refrigerator. But I will suggest that you get a first floor room with an interior hallway. We didn't have a choice and were "stuck" on the third floor and the door opened to the outside corridor. It was quite a hike to the elevator so I made my DH carry the cake down the stairs. ![]()
I was a wreck until we got the completed cake into the van.
But everything turned out fine and the bride loved it. ![]()
Good luck and trust your instincts!
I, too, have taken cakes a long distance. I once took one from Bay City, MI (just off the Saginaw Bay) to central Indiana (near Bloomington, home of Indiana University). We stayed in a hotel the night before and night of the wedding. Took my mixer and supplies in case I needed to make x-tra icing. I would suggest you box each tier separately and cart them in boxes ... a bit more secure than stacking and transporting, I think.
Don't worry, you'll do just fine. The suggestion to get a 1st floor room is a great one. Also don't be afraid to tell the hotel what you need (a good, sturdy table in the room will obviously be necessary, too). Their goal is to keep you happy so you will come back and/or send friends to stay with them. If they can accommodate your requests, that's how they'll do it!
Good Luck!
