Hey
Ok first of all Im new to the board. Ive checked out some of the pictures of the cakes in the gallery and they are beautiful! I have NEVER made a cake in my life and I have my daughters 2nd birthday coming up and I plan on giving it a try! I told my husband to bake the cake and I'll decorate! HAHAHA. Heres my dumb questions. I bought a rectangle pan and I would like to put a fairy on it. Do you draw it free hand with the icing? How do you do it? Where do you get the icing? Or do you make it??? Whats better? If you buy white do you just add regular food colouring?? soooo many questions. LOL I use to decorate cakes years ago but they were ice cream cakes.. Not to sure how to use regular icing or what kinds.. Yeah im a rookie! Thanks
The first thing I'd tell you do to since you're new here, is go to the recipe section and look up icing recipes.... a good buttercream is probably what you'd need to decorate with... that is what most decorator's use ... There are some instructions on here for buttercream transfers or the acronym we use here BCT ... you'll see a lot of those here LOL .. just ask if you're not sure what they mean... if I were you, I'd try the BCT onto a cake ... hope this helps some ![]()
First of all, welcome aboard! My suggestion would be to do what is called a Frozen Buttercream Transfer (BCT).

That link is a tutorial on how to make one. I would suggest either finding a picture online by googling something like "Coloring book fairy" and find a nice basic picture with good lines and print it out. It will be easier to trace. There is also many good threads here on the message boards all about BCT. Just use the search feature and go nuts!

Thanks girls for your help, I will try the buttercream. That really helps me out. But how do you trace the picture on the cake?
I've never done a BCT yet, but the tutorial link Kristy post should tell you how ... the instructions are good and easy enough to follow .. if you have any problems, just come back here and make another post... someone that has experience can help you along ![]()
Oh ok I looked a that article, thank you. What about those cakes that people make using icing with that star tip. How do they get thier picture onto that cake or is it freehand?
I've used clear gel .. I reverse the pic.. put a piece of wax paper over the reversed image.. trace it with clear gel, flip the gel side of the wax paper down onto the cake .. you'll have a clear outline of your image on your cake.. you outline w/color buttercream.. then you can either fill in w/a star tip or fill in w/a thinned buttercream.. some have do colorflo images straight onto the cakes too .. hope this helps and I have confused you more! lol
ohhhhhhhhhhhh ok I got it. what kind of gel would I use for the way you do it?? ANd would I use the same gel if I were to do it the froozen way?? Whats the name and the brand, what do i look for? and where? sooo many questions
Wilton makes a tub of clear piping gel which is just called Piping Gel. You use this pretty much as a guide, just pipe the gel out onto wax paper with your picture under it, and then press the gel onto a crusted (iced cake that has been sitting for about 20 mins) cake. With a decorating brush, gently trace over the gel. Then lift up the wax paper and it should all be tranferred onto the cake.
You can get the gel at any craft store like AC Moore, Michael's, etc. They also sell it on the wilton website (wilton.com).
