My future son-in-law wants an Aggie Bonfire cake as his Groom's cake. With few Aggie guests, I am concerned most guests will not know what it is and think the Groom's cake is 'ugly'. My daughter does not want the outhouse on top....and I agree, so are there suggestions on a nice looking one that is obviously a bonfire?
Or other suggestions to please everyone????
Pictures would be extremely helpful. Thanks

Maybe you could do a simple round cake with a re-creation of the bonfire out of chocolate transers kind of stacked up against one another. Or you could do fondant things that are in the bonfire and maybe take tissue paper for the fire and intertwine it in it. You could put go aggies or something like that so people get that its a sports cake.

Coming from a school where athletics rules I understand the Grooms cake and say go for it. If guests don't get it they will always ask and it could make for interesting conversaion.

4 cakes from the gallery (seems to be the only 4)

http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&meta=search&type=full&search=aggie+bonfire

and it's not an Aggie bonfire without the outhouse! to leave it off would be an INSULT.

at the risk of starting a dust-up -- it's HIS cake -- so go the full route and put the outhouse on top.

(it's drawn to 1/4 inch scale -- could rescale smaller or larger)

and note how in one pirouette cookies were used for the logs -- fast and easy (tho' chocolate dipped ones would be even better!

I'm doing an Aggie bonfire cake for this weekend. Since no one here knows about the significance of the bonfire the groom wrote an explanation that is in a small frame and will sit next to the bonfire cake. I have 2 nieces that went to A&M so I know the importance of the outhouse, etc. I did an Aggie groom's cake for one of their weddings and did the Aggie star logo out of chocolate for the cake top. It was all choc., choc. drizzle and dipped strawberries so the logo went well.

HHCakes. Thank you for your suggestions. If you take pictures after the weekend, I would love to see them! Was having the star logo an 'insult' as the above writer feels? I do not want to insult anyone and our groom is 'teasing' about wanting the cake, but my daugher wants to surprise him.

No, the star logo is called the T-Star and goes with A&M. The "insult" with the outhouse is the outhouse represents Univ. of TX and it sits on top of the bonfire and is consumed in flames and goes up in smoke as all good Aggies hope will happen to the Univ. of TX during the football game. It's a big in-state rival game. If my pictures come out good I'll send you one and I'll also take a picture of what the groom wrote as his explanation.

I meant insult in the the sense of not respecting the traditions of the bonfire and send the "stand-in" for the rivals up in flames.

HHCakes and Doug, thank you both for your clarification. I still hope to find a bonfire cake that is obvious and does not insult anyone else....as a close family member of the bride is a UT grad. icon_surprised.gif How do you please EVERYONE??? icon_cry.gif (The rest of us are BU, SMU, and TCU, so we do not care about the other rivalries) icon_lol.gif

HHCakes, I will look forward to the pictures and what the groom wrote. Thank you very much.

I would love to see your cake when you are finished. I found an article that states, " The bonfire stack is "crowned" with an outhouse affectionately known as the "t.u. tearoom or frat house."

There is also an Austin Highway sign placed at the top with the outhouse - if you change your mind and choose to put it at the top.

Gig 'em Aggies!! (Class of 90)

hmmm... well, it's still for the groom and not the friend...and she is marrying the groom sooooooo....the bonfire needs it's "tea room".

tho' the earlier suggestion of putting the Aggie logo on top could work (but not where near as fun)

(and besides...the friend should be used to it and understand the tradition)

sorry, but you HAVE to put the outhouse on top! If not, it may as well be a campfire with marshmallows served with it! I am not an Aggie, but I went to a couple of bonfires (wow, fun times!)...you will be surprised how many guests (doesn't matter what college) will know what it is. And the UT Longhorn - you can bet they will be standing proud with their pointer and pinky fingers in the air during the Aggie War Hymn (gotta love Texas wedding receptions!). It will all be fine. Make sure and post the pic!

For those of you that aren't from the area, the bonfire is HUGE, both in actual size and tradition. Due to a terrible tragedy about 8 years ago, the physical size has been reduced, but still very strong tradition. I don't remember the history exactly -someone correct my facts if needed, but the bonfire has to burn without collapsing before midnight. Before midnight=UT will win, after midnight=A&M will win.

Thank you for your suggestions and information. icon_biggrin.gif You have given what I need so our decision is made on how to decorate the cake. thumbs_up.gif How are we going to do it, you ask???? tapedshut.gif But for all of you Aggies, you nor your traditions will be insulted. icon_razz.gif Thank you again for your help in this matter.
