Well, it's official, I had my first cake disaster!! I was making my husband a father's day cake, a bucket of beer!! I worked on the sugar beer bottles for days, made the mold etc. Ok, so I baked the cake, I made the "Darn Good Chocolate Cake" recipe, with Chocolate Syrup icing. Big mistake. I knew it wasn't going to be a positive experience when I started carving the cake, it was falling to pieces, besides the fact, the icing doesn't crust well and I couldn't get it smooth.. Those darn chocolate chips (mini) really don't do well when carving.. Anyway, I was going to make it silver, when I put the fondant on, the cake starting bulging everywhere, and the fondant just was not working. So, I decided to make slats to cover up the ugly fondant, things were getting a little better, and I thought possible I could save it with some creativity..... Well, I made the sugar ice and it was really cool, and I got really excited to get it on the cake, so, I stuck my first beer bottle in and the cake started cracking, OMG, what am I going to do, so I put dowels under the bottles thinking that would take the pressure off the cake, well, things went from bad to worse, the whole cake just fell apart, before I could even finish with ice and everything else. I wanted to cry, but instead I just decided I officially have my wings, I am now in the ranks of the famous!! Ha! Ha! BTW, the cake was delicious!! I want to thank SweetResults for all of her kind help with the ice and bottles. I will try again, and hopefully things will go better!!
Wow, that is one of the nicest disasters I have ever seen, LOL!
Good thing it was for DH, I'm sure that took some pressure off.
I would love to know how you made that ice, it looks awesome. So do the bottles.
I'm sure next time you make it, it will end up in favorites, not disasters ;D
Thanks for the positive comments!! No, I did not freeze the cakes, but I did refrigerate over night. The ice was easy, thanks to SweetResults, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup corn syrup, microwave for 3-4 minutes pour on foil that has been crinkled and smoothed and let set for about an hour, then put in mixer and mix with paddle, it kind of shaves and breaks it up!! Sweet Results really was so helpful with the beer bottles and the ice!!!
Very cool! Your bottles and ice are so realistic!
And at least you still got to eat a delicious cake! ![]()
I like the Darned Good Chocolate (without chips) cake but not sure if cake needs to be more dense to carve well and hold up to weight of fondant, sugar ice and bottles.... I have no experiences with this but am interested in learning from your experience. I think the ice and bottles look fabulous!
I really think it looks great! If you hadn't said so I would have thought you planned it that way. I am so impressed with everything you did on this cake. Very nice job and I bet DH just loved it. Think of it this way now you have a great cake and a great funny story to share. ![]()
I agree with Doug too!! It looks great. Did your hubby like it?
My husband did love it!! We had a bbq that day for family and everyone really like my bottles. My sweet mother is here visiting from Texas and she watched me struggle for several days with the bottles, she is the one that made me take the picture right before it fell apart. Needless to say we both got a good laugh, but, at the same time I was very disappointed!! Like I said before the cake was delicious, Darn Good Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Syrup icing!! Thank you everyone for all of your nice comments, it makes me feel much better! ![]()
