I have a request for this cake from one of my best friends. They are renewing their wedding vows after 13 yrs of marriage. She didnt have a wedding when they first got married, so she is making this a big event.
She does not want the top part, she wants all buttercream and only 3 tiers. My questions are: can you do that design on buttercream? Any tips and ideas would greatly be appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!! ![]()
OK, that's fondant. Now you can do it in buttercream, but it's really hard. The leaves look like icing embroidery. Of course, the flowers, if not real will have to be done from fondant (gumpaste would be even better).
That cake pan is a specialty set (not made by wilton, but on some websites). and it is extremely pricey. I remember a thread from a long time ago. Colette used that pan for something.
Looks like the border is a rope of fondant. You could do a simple shell border and it wouldn't be too different.
But if she really wants that look, it has to be fondant. My opinion anyway.
Good luck!
You could probably do the leaf pattern on the buttercream using the brush embroidery technique. I think that would look nice.

That's a good suggestion dodibug....you could match fondant color to the bc color and cutout in shape of leaves, then do brush embroidery on the leaf shapes.
You can do brush embroidery on a buttercream cake. The wedding cake in my photos is buttercream with brush embroidery all over it. You just have to use a light hand when pulling the icing in.
THANKS! I will definately do a trial run on this cake. I dont have the shaped pans, and I have decided to stop investing in cake pans, since they no longer fit in my pantry!
Fronklowes, what type of brush do you use? I see that the wilton states decorator's brush, but if you go to Michaels there is so many choices!
I will definately post the picture after I am done.. I may end up changing the design a bit.. And I think I am going to use fake grapes. I hope I can find them at Michaels or Hobby Lobby!
Thank you for your all your help!
