The title says it all!!
I have very little experience, and up to now have spent most of my time scrapbooking and card making. I now have the urge to start cake decorating.
I just wondered if anyone could point me towards a starting point please. Maybe something easy to ease myself into it!
Maybe you could show me a pic of your first cake? Or point me towards recipes / classes / threads?
Sorry, loads of questions, but I love this site and can't wait to start creating ![]()

Well I hope you get addicted to it like I am
. Anyways there are Wilton classes you can take like at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. I didn't get to take any as there are no classes around me close. I suggest get you some tips and some bags and bake ya a cake and just have fun. Here is my first decorated cake and let me tell ya it's not good but it sure was fun!

Go straight to your local Michael's or JoAnn's and sign up for their classes. They aren't terribly expensive and often have deals (kit is 50% off, or you and a friend for the price of one). The classes most likely will inspire an addiction to cake decorating! Good luck and have fun!
Just start experimenting! Find a class, if you can, but if not, maybe a decorating book. Find one that's inspiring, but not too intimidating and just start working. The libraray is a great place to start looking. Since you've got a crafty background you'll do great!!
Hi, Iam from Holland, didn't take any classes too (not possible with my health situation) but just looked up everything on the internet.
If you want to see some videos of covering cakes with fondant (or you could use marzipan) or maybe with Buttercream, make some decorations or somethings you could pay a visit to www.youtube.com Search for Cake decorating and you will get to see these videos.
Most of my cakes I make with puzzle-pictures, take a coloring page, print it 2, cut it out in the different color pieces (like sweater of pants of anything) and cut them out of fondant or marzipan and put them together on the other pic you printed (put this in a plastic cover) and put the fondant pieces on top.
If you want to have a look at my pics www.tartacadabra.nl go to Taarten and then to Fotogallerie.
If you want to know something more just ask!!!
Hope you have fun!!

Try your local colleges or adult education centres. I know lots of them do cake decorating classes in the UK (not that I've taken any myself, I'm self-taught!). They are usually held in the evenings, so working people can attend. Hope that helps!
I started decorating about a year ago and I am completely self taught. We do have plenty of classes here I just don't have the time to take them. As far as where to start you picked a great place to do it. CC is a pool of knowlege and information. Everyone is always so willing to share their thoughts and ideas. My recommendation is to go to the articles and find a technique you want to learn. This is a link to the articles on CC homepage: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-guides.html
Since you already have a knack for things artistic you probably won't have any problems learning this wonderful hobby. And remember if you have any questions post them here you'll be amazed how quickly someone answer.
Well, my vote if you can't get classes...CC! There is so much information on this site, just read, and you will be amazed=) But there are also some really good websites that has the basics on it. Gonna link them for you. Welcome to CC samb!!

It also helps to hook up with people already doing cake decorating. A good place for this would be the British Sugarcraft Guild: http://www.bsguk.org/
They have regular meetings and demos and there's probably a branch where you live.
