I just got two new books and they both suggest using pencil to make marks on fondant. Is that safe? Isn't lead dangerous? Does anyone do this? In one book they draw directly on the cake and the other use the pecil to make a transfer.

Pencils aren't made with lead anymore. They're made with graphite.

I'm not sure about the "safety" issue, but with the miniscule amounts that would end up on the cake/icing, I can't see a problem...

I am pretty sure that pencils are no longer made of lead, not the kind that is dangerous to your health anyway. I think a small mark here and there isnt going to do any kind of damage...unless of course you eat a whole pencil....so just dont decorate with the pencil itself! Good luck!

The lead that is in pencils isn't really "lead" it is actually graphite. But I'm still not sure I would "write" on a cake with it. I usually mark with a toothpick.
