Hi, My husband is wanting to build me a cake decorating work station. I am trying to get ideas for all of you what you feel is essential and handy to have in your work station. Peg boards or is there a better idea for storing the cake pans. What type of storage area, counter space etc... would all of you recommend. we are finishing our basement and he has said that I could have a large area to dedicate it to my cake decorating.
Ideas please or pics of your work areas would be greatly appreciated./
happy baking

I would want a work space similiar to the workbench my husband made for his woodworking shop. A large flat work space (like a bench or table) but around the edge is a "trough" where I could put small tools that I was using without them falling on the floor or being in the way on the work surface ..... tips, bags of icing, cutters and shapers.
What a nice husband!!!
I wish I had one of those cuboards for your KA mixer. It looks like a regular cuboard, but when you open the door your KA mixer comes out on a shelf like thing. So that way it isnt always sitting on the counter. Or you dont feel like it is a chore to get it out. Hope this make sense.
Hi
since I have no husband I needed to come up with storage also. I purchased the largest cupboard Lowe's had - then adjusted the shelves to the height of my largest pans. Also at Lowe's they had tall metal plate holders. The kind you would stand your plates on end. They are wide enough for your 2" pans. Then I placed my 4-6-8-10 pans together and then put them in my 12"pan in a way that the small pans where facing the inside of the 12" pan. This way when I pull out the 12" pan the rest do not fall all over my floor. I have stored my heart, round, square, etc pans like this. And the rest of the cupboard has room for my pillares in pull out drawer storage - also from Lowe's. I am sure if your husband is handy he can build you this unit. Just make sure you have something in between your pans it helps. Good Luck

I was reading the other replys and its a "appliance garage"---this is a cupboard that has a roll down lid (like a roll top desk) where your KA would stay, so its actually on the counter but hidden. You could also just have 2 doors that shut in front of it, as opposed to the roll down version.
If its built large enough, that might be a great place to put an airbrush machine etc...anything thats large and you might want hidden to stay more organized.
I would have my mixer on the shelf which comes out & raises up to counter height, locks in place, then release & back down & out of sight when you are done.
For my pans, my dh has put up a shelf above the freezer & my work space. It is one of those closet organizers, metal bars that you cut to length. It doesn't hold dust, so I put the pans upside down to keep them as clean as possible. I'll try to attach the pic...it is the length of the wall, about 7 ft. long. It goes over one door into the living room & then I have a pass thru window by my work space. I hope this makes sense!
Like everyone else said, lots of counter tops and storage. I have one pantry type unit that I actually left the doors off of to make it easier access for my colors, bags, tips, sprinkles, etc that I use a lot. I have another one that has doors for small ingredients, flavorings, chocolate chips, stuff like that, that should be covered and protected. As far as pans go, I have outgrown any storage unit, there is a side room at my shop that is the "Pan Room" It has 11 metal shevling units with non skid rubber on the shelves for pans. I keep characters seperate from animals, cars, holidays, etc and then sheets, rounds, squares etc. There's also a couple of those units that are for seperater plates. I bought the 3 drawer rubbermaid plastic bins for pillars and they work pretty good because they are wide enough for the tallest to lay down sideways and I can seperate push-in pillars from standard and the like. It makes it very quick to be able to put your hands on exactly what you need it the least amount of time! HTH, please don't laugh at my OCD! -Lori
