I have only made one sheet cake so far, but have an order for another in about a week. When I made my first sheet cake, I did not cover the cake board (Wilton cardboard type) and I think the cake kind of stuck to the board a bit. After I put it down on the cake board, I was not able to pick up the cake without tearing it.

My question is does everyone cover their cake boards? If so, what do you use? I covered one cake board before, but I only did it for the color of the board. So, if I want a plain white cake board, what can I use so that my cake will not stick - contact paper???

I think contact paper is ingenious- never heard of it until I came here. Whoever first thought of it should get an award!

I use white contact paper most of the time. You can look through the forums too, I know this comes up quite a bit. And I agree with sweetamber, whoever thought of it is brillant.

I used to cover my cake boards with regular foil and it was OK. I now use the Wilton's fancy foil board cover. It is grease proof and looks very nice.

Some people in these forums have mentioned using wrapping paper to coordinate with the cake and then covering that with clear contact paper. Also, I've seen posts for covering your boards with fondant. Looks very pretty.

When I need white, I use freezer paper, putting the shiny side where the cake will sit. It seems to do pretty well with the grease and my cakes have never stuck to it.

I too always use freezer paper. Wilton fanci foil is too expensive for me!
I've never had a problem with the freezer paper.

further along this topic, if I'm using foamcore for cake boards, will I need to cover them with anything? Even for a stacked cake?
