I need to do a baby shower cake (boy) and the customer wants LOTS of icing! She will pay extra for a cake with tons of icing. Any ideas for a baby shower cake with tons of icing?

I would definitely make 2-2" layer cakes then torte each one so you now have 4 - 1" layers then put a nice thick layer between all of the layers. Then i would just put my standard icing on the outside and do a lot of decorations out of icing.

my baby shower cake has tons of clouds, that makes use of lots of frosting.

So Maybe tort the cake, then make clouds!

If you put mounds of flowers on the cake, I make a "mountain" of icing and put the flowers on this mountain to give height to the mound of flowers. My 18x24 sheet cake with the huge floral center had icing 2" high in the middle, where the mound was!

I would be careful with this though. The person ordering the cake may LUV icing, but maybe not everyone LUV'S it as much as she does. That's why I like using the Icing Mountain Method.... I dont' want the non-icing lovers to think "Ick! I'm never ordering from her because she slaps way too much icing on there!" I can provide "LOTS" of icing here and there in a mound of flowers, but still have "normal" icing on the rest of the cake.

(Of course I'm an icing snob, but at baby showers and such, I always scrape the icing off. One, it doesn't taste as good as mine icon_rolleyes.gif and Two, there's always WAY too much on there!)

I'm with indydebi on this one.. I for one HATE icing.. sorry all you icing lovers out there.. I just can't stand the stuff, so a cake with TONS-O-ICING would put me off. A little bit is cool.. too much is like eating pure sugar and induces gaggin for me.. LOL. I like the idea of having areas with tons of icing so the mom to be can gorge herself in icing if she so wants.. but spare the rest of the party guests. I know I woudl thank you.. icon_wink.gif

Is there a way you could incorporate cupcakes into the design. That way the cupcakes can be 'icing hogs' but the cake stay standard.

I've had requests for extra thick icing and I put on as much icing as the design would take without compromising the stability of the cakes layers. It's the client who's paying so she gets what she wants but I make the call on what'll work. Any guest who doesn't like icing can and will scape it off or eat around it OR just pass on the cake. I'm never offended. It's what I do when the icing is too much or not very tasty. I love a corner piece of a cake with good icing but sometimes it can be just a little much. I say just try not to take it personally if they leave some on the plate or pass altogether on cake.

Thank you all for your imput!! I just love this place! I think I will do a little of each. Part of the cake with lots and leave parts of it with not as much. It sure is great to get feed back from you all! Thanks again!
