I am making a cross cake next week and I want to cover it with fondant that looks like wood grain. Any suggestions?

You need a rolling pin with the effect built into it. Theres one which is supposed to be watered satin effect. If you roll brown fondant out the run the satin rolling pin over it you should get the effect

I thought I just read in a post this weekend that someone else needed a wood grain effect on fondant and she didn't have the roller.

She rolled the fondant out that was already colored brown and then took a fork and a toothpick to make the lines or grain. Then she cut strips or planks out of the wood and put each piece down so it looked like wood.

Does that make any sense?

Then, I think she said she used a egg wash??? or something to make it shiny. You could leave that off I guess.

Sorry cant be of more help. Look in the most recent uploaded pictures. It was of a pirate ship and in the comments she mentioned how she did it.
