truly do not want to do them??? There are so many beautiful wedding cakes on here but I just don't even want to try one yet. I was just wondering if any of you DON'T do them for that reason or just because you have no desire to. I thought by now that I would at least want to do a trial wedding cake but NOPE...either I am just being to lazy and don't want the responsiblity or just plain spineless again and scared. It just seems like way to much pressure...who know's what I am thinking.

i used to be afraid of a wedding cake, but really if you think about it, if you can do a tiered cake you can do a wedding cake. I stay away from wedding cakes because I don't want the potential hassle w/ the bride etc. Yet on the other hand, I don't "really" run a business and most of the peopl I know are married already. LOL

I just started doing them, in fact I just posted my first paid wedding cake. I was scared to death and for a full year turned down every wedding cake job I was offered. But then my hubby said, "You are doing 2-5 other cakes per week all that have a ton of figure, 3-d, detail work. Why not do 1 wedding cake for less work and more $$$"

He was kinda right. I just started and I am slamed with wedding orders. I am sure you could do them if you want to. For me, as with most decoraters, I am my own worst critic. Once you get over that, full steam ahead.

But if you do not WANT to do them, don't. You are in controll. You do not have to if you think they are too much trouble. But I am sure talent wise you would be great at it icon_biggrin.gif

I have only done one wedding cake ( my daughter's) and I don't care if I never do another. I think I decorated each tier 10 times. I do this for fun not my job and I don't want the stress because I am too much of a perfectionist. Will I do another probably because there are a few coworkers who will insist and I wouldn't want to let them down. I have done several that could be considered wedding cakes because of thier size but since they weren't I wasn't stressed. It is most likely all in my mind. LOL

I say go for it! One, the money is MUCH better and tow, to me it's LOTS less stressful than dealing with all of the fondant figures and mothers of 5 year olds who think their little darling's birthday is 2nd only to Charles and Diana's wedding! Three, a 3-tiered wedding cake is just 3 little cakes that happen to be stacked on each other. And if you use the acrylic stands (see my M&M cake), then there is no doweling or pillars or anything.

I'd MUCH rather do 3 wedding cakes in one weekend than mess with 2 little birthday cakes!

Oh I would love to WANT to do one. I guess I am scared of BTB's and MOB's. I can't even handle the stress my MIL gives me. You make it sound so easy I wish I felt that way!

I find the stress of a wedding cake unbearable. If you drop a birthday cake people will be upset, if you drop a wedding cake YOU'VE RUINED THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF MY LIFE!!!! I find yself shaking when I'm setting a cake upand hate all the catering staff etc. watching. However, I did make a conscious decision that I would only do wedding cakes as the money is better and I get to do some great fun elaborate designs.

Since my son is 10 and in school, I am finding it easier to find people who want birthday/celebration cakes rather than wedding cakes. That gives me at least 10 years to get good at birthday cakes and work my way up to wedding cakes. Ha!

I used to be more scared of them but after I did a few I just realized its just like doing regular cakes but bigger. And when I got my p/t catering job I got more experience as well.

However I do not get many wedding orders. Every 3D cake that gets ordered and added to my site reinforces the image that I am a 3D party cake baker rather than a wedding cake maker! I guess its ok though because I'm starting to charge decent per serving so really the money is almost as good....however a wedding cake for 150 would be alot more profit than the 3D cakes I make for 30-50, and probably equal work/time.
