I need to know right away how many cake mixes it takes for a doll cake. And also is it okay to freeze layer until I'm ready to decorate? One more...can I freeze a layer of buttercream frosting between the two layers?
Thanks
Robin
Are you talking about the wonder mold? I've always used just one box for it. If you're planning on using a real barbie you'll need more because you'll need to make another cake for the "dress" part to sit on for a barbie to fit all the way in.
Yes you can freeze it with or without buttercream. Without buttercream just wrap it real well. With buttercream, I like to freeze for about a half hour and then wrap up so the buttercream doesn't stick to the wrap.
If you look in my photos you will see one there. I used a pyrex bowl, and 2 8" rounds. Minimal shaping had to be done. I used 3 cake mixes only because I like to have a high cake to be able to stick a full sized Barbie doll in it instead of a pick. You can fill the layers, freeze. It makes shaping and carving a lot easier. I used a cheap $3.00 barbie from Wal Mart and froze my cakes. The doll I wrapped in plastic wrap so as to not mess up her clothes so the little girl could keep the doll. Hope this helps. By the way, no one got to eat this cake because the child refused to let anyone touch her. Almost sad, a birthday and no one was allowed to eat the cake.

Thank you both. That answers my questions. I'm doing 2 lg. dolls and 2 sm. dolls, one just for her. So hopefully there'll be enough cake for all. I posted the diagram of the cake I PLAN on making in a previous post. I'll try to attach it here.
thanks again

Kat,
the cake I did had 2 layers of filling. Just do a heavy dam and nope, it won't be wobbly at all.

If you don't put a cake underneath and just use the wondermold itself for the doll, can you fill that? How? Where would you cut it to serve?
I've never used the wander mold simply because I don't see the point in buying a pan that I can use things that I already have to do the same thing. Also, the wander mold will only serve about 12. How many parties have you seen that so few people attend? Anyway, if you do use that pan, I don't see why you cant torte it and simply reassemble it.
