I recently did a cake for an event of my sister's. I had told her how to cut the cake, but the person who actually cut it, cut the pieces way too big and they nearly ran out of cake.
So I was thinking about including 'instuctions' with my cakes... what size to cut, watch out for dowels, etc.
Is this tacky and unprofessional? Most people I talk to just take my word for what size cake they need and never ask how they should cut it. I always mention the serving size, but I don't want anyone running out of cake!

I taped a little note to the top of the box thanking them for the business but I also listed what size pieces to cut. (it was a sheet cake so no other info was really needed). Them did seem very gracious that it was there as a guidance.

Tacky? No way! It's a wonderful idea. Plus it helps everyone who has never cut a cake before.

Including instructions is NOT tacky - in fact including instructions would be considered professional.

I leave cutting instruction with all my wedding cake orders. I make sure to include a diagram of the shape of the cake (round, square, etc) so that they can see how to cut. I also put in bold letters and usually 3x bigger print the exact size of each serving for a wedding 1" x 2" x 4"high

I also include some helpful tips like: have a box under the serving table to put pillars, dowels, plates, etc. Tips on how to separate tiers, etc.

I have this typed in a nice format and put in a plastic sheet protector.

I do the same as pp. I have a form in excel that lists all the things and I add and delete from it for each cake. If anyone would like it, just pm your email addy and I will send it along.

I would really like to have some models of cutting the cake. I am rather new in this hobby and I don't know how to cut cakes very well. I would appreciate it if you could send me the information you were talking about. Thanks! icon_smile.gif

I leave instructions as well. Non caker people may not realize that there are wood dowels in the cake or that ribbons, ect are not edible. I always insruct how to disassemble the cake, how many slices per tier, and include diagrams on how to cut.

Kamy, I have a pictorial on my website. You are more than welcome to refer your brides to this page. http://cateritsimple.com/_wsn/page19.html

Here is the wilton cutting chart. I pretty much use the diagram shown on the square cakes on ALL cakes .... square, round, heart, whatever. http://www.wilton.com/wedding/cakeinfo/cuttingguide.cfm

I've done this a few times. Most people cut huge pieces of cake not knowing the standard size.

I think it's a great idea, particularly if people have ordered a cake to serve a particular number, then providing instructions to ensure they get the correct servings covers yourself, and I think is a very professional idea! icon_biggrin.gif
