I know- people just don't understand. For my birthday this year my SIL said they were just going to get a cake from Dairy Queen so I didn't have to make my own 
I said "Are you kidding? That's the only way I know I'll get a cake I like!" I know, I'm very picky. But I don't know anyone who likes to cook or bake as much as I do and the thought of a store bought cake makes me very sad.

Happy Birthday...I just went through this...my bday was on July 25th...my remedy...i let my daughter who is 15 bake me a cake (she loves to watch me bake and help alot) and that was the best cake of all!!!
thank you everyone! I didn't even know I had two pages of replies. I was just informed that they were gonna be buying me a cake so I am kinda bummed. My fave cake is tres leches. Last year my mom bought me a chocolate tres leches which was WAY nasty. Firstly I had never t asted a chocolate tres leches cake so I didn't know what to expect. Secondly for stor cakes I am NOT the chocolate person.. aS a matter of fact I will almost always choose white or yellow over chocolate althought the chocolate reipe from epicurious is the bomb!

If you want to make your own cake, tell "them" that it is your wish to make your own cake. They probably think they are doing you a favor by not having you "work" on your birthday.
I had a party for my 25th anniversary and made my own cake. I couldn't see it any other way!
