Ok, Ive wondered this for to long, now I show my stupidiness (sp...lol) I see all these wonderful looking cakes & such, made with tons od beautiful decorations. I have NEVER had a cake of such, so I dont have a clue how it works. Cakes covered in Fondants & flowers & so on, can you eat it all & is it easy to cut into? I have wanted to ask this forever now but I didnt want to show just how new of a decorator & beginner I really am...lol But now, this has really sparked my interist, I must know! I have choosen not to do Fondant cakes just yet because I havent learnt how to & it seem a bit difficult to do. I need to take the class before I do anything Im thinking just because I want to start out making it the right way! Chicken, sure I am to venture out on this one...lol
So...how easy is it to cut into those purrrty looking cakes? Do you undress it 1st or what?

First of all.....you are not stupid and there are no stupid questions on CC...everyone has to start somewhere!!! icon_biggrin.gif

To answer your questions.....is everything edible? Depends on the cake. Flowers and such that are made with gumpaste and fondant are definitely edible but are usually dried hard so most people won't actually eat them. As far as covering a cake with fondant.....no, they are not hard to cut into. Usually the top surface of the fondant will sort of crust over, but below the surface is usually still soft and tends to sort of melt into the buttercream layer underneath it. Some people don't like the taste or texture of fondant and I have been to weddings where they have peeled off the entire surface of the cake to remove the fondant before serving. This is not really necessary unless they use the icky Wilton fondant, which to me tastes like old tires!!

I think fondant is fun to work with because you can do so much with it that you can't do with buttercream. It takes some practice, but hey....what doesn't!! i would definitely encourage you to take a class on it to learn the basics of how to apply it, etc. I think you'll love it once you get started with it!!!

Cool, thanks for the insight! Ive read alot about the Wilton stuff & how ICKY it is, so I always wondered. I have considered taking the classes 1st, so that way I start off on the right foot, then can pick up any shortcuts along the way. That always seems to be the best way for me.
I did take the coarse 1 calls so far, & I will post my last cake on here. It was an idea I made up along the way....lol I still need tons of practice on the roses tho, forsure! But it came out really cute, I think.
