Have you ever used candy clay? or MMF? It's like using play-doh. If you wanted the hair dryer to be made of cake - I'd suggest freezing a cake first and then carving out the shape while it's frozen. Crumbcoat it while it's frozen too. Have a hair dryer sitting right by you so you have something to model it from.

What about a FBCT. You could use search for a picture using Google- Images. I LOVE the idea of the cord going around the cake! That is fantastic! What a good sister you are for going to this much work!

You could do a FBCT and then just make the cord out of either fondant of candy clay.

I live near Candyland Crafts and happened to see a mold set for hairstylists. I would say if you have time to order one, and just use it as a mold for fondant. Personally, I like fondant on cakes better than chocolate.

You would probably want to make the cord out of black fondant. If you have a clay gun (or can get one) that will make the fondant rope very uniform in size. You can then hand-mold the plug and stick it to the cord with egg white or water.
