I Just Don't Know What I Was Thinking!

I got this half baked idea for doing a grill cake for a family cookout tomorrow. But heaven's no, I couldn't make it easy! All layers I refer to are 2-inch torted and filled with fruit filling (I KNOW...what was I thinking...)
2 9 inch layers, 1 8 inch layer, 2 10 inch layers.
ALL ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER! Halfway through, I dowelled it and put a cake board and I put a dowel and a skewer through the entire thing. The top three layers are carved kind of like a kettle grill, the bottom two are the base.
The whole thing is slipping and sliding and leaning and one of my dams broke and I haven't even finished the crumb coat yet! I was planning on using fondant, but I'm worried about what the extra weight is going to do to it.
I have to travel 1 1/2 hours with this nightmare tomorrow! icon_cry.gif Is there anything I can do to stabilize it, beside ditching those bottom layers? ANY suggestions at all are much appreciated!!!

Well, I knew better and now I've learned my lesson...it just collapsed on my counter. icon_cry.gif Thank goodness I finished that crumb coat, at least it mostly held together as it fell to its doom!
I'm off to see what I can salvage...

For anyone who might want to prevent this in the future... upon closer inspection, my bottom layers just were not sturdy enough for this kind of constuction. Doctored cake mix with pudding added...delicious but way too moist and delicate for serious stacking. They just smooshed.

I feel your pain. I too know the feeling of seeing your cake fall to it's doom! Yesterday, I was flipping my cake from the cooling rack to the board and it slipped off and broke into 4 big chunks. I just picked up the phone and called two of my cake buddies for encouragement. I didn't cry, but boy I sure felt like I wanted to.

I kept telling myself that the only way to get better is practice, practice, practice. I just wanted you to know you're definitely not alone. Hang in there!
