Ok, I'm really new at this, and I've heard a lot about torting cakes. When do you torte your cakes? Do you ALWAYS do it, or just sometimes. When you make a cake that has two layers, do you torte both layers, or just put filling on one and put the other layer on top... Prior to CC, I'd only seen one cake torted, and that was an angel cake that was torted 3 times, to make 4 layers with fruit/filling in between. It wasn't frosted so that it showed off it's beautiful insides. Yeah, it was in a kraft magazine. But it seems like a lot of wedding cakes are torted...so is each tier just 1 cake that has been torted?

to tort or not to tort ....that is the question
(again and again and again....) LOL!

really all depends upon how you/client want the cake to be.

traditional wedding tier is two 2-inch cakes which have each been torted once. so 4 layers of cake and 3 layers of filling. approx. height when finished is 4 inches.

some prefer just to the to just take the two cakes, not tort and only have the one layer of filling in between.

some even tort sheet cakes.

side note: in this area there is a tradition of a cake that has been torted so each layer is only about 1/8-1/4 inch thick w/ frosting in between....whole ton of layers!

no set rules...just what personal/client preference is.

I never tort unless it's requested. To be honest, in 25 years, I really never heard of "torting" until I found CC. That little "fad" must not be really big in the midwest or something. icon_lol.gif

I've started torting for family cakes, to show them what can be done (thanks, CC'ers, for educating me!). Goodness, everyone thinks I'm a Goddess when I cut those cakes! (well....... even MORE of a goddess than they already thought! thumbs_up.gifking.gif )

I always torte mine to have 4 layers of cake and 3 layers of filling. I make it about 4" high for each tier.

When I want to be all fancy, I tort, but people don't want to pay for it (usually) so I only do it when I want to show off! I personally love a torted cake, having all that extra filling.....yummm

I really just do what the client wants. I have taken many pictures of the insides of my cakes to show them the difference!

I love the look of a torted cake (4 layers/3 filling). So pretty! icon_biggrin.gif

I torte wedding cakes (to add to the elegance) and usually do not torte party cakes unless they are a more formal cake.

I'm going to make DH's Father's day cake (drawing design inspiration from a CC cake!) and I'm convinced...he's worth the torting! Torting it is!!!....wish me luck.

I always tort. It seems to make the cake "taller" and more level. Plus most of the people I make cakes for love the filling between layers.

Yeah, I love the filling...really for me, cake is just a way to get the filling and frosting in my mouth!
