Stacking Layers Iced With Buttercream?!?!

Need a little help...anybody know the easiest way to stack buttercream layers without messing up the icing. I always end up with a mess at the bottom of layer..any suggestions... THANKS!

Sprinkle the bottom layer top with powdered sugar before placing the top layer on it.

What does that do? I am very interested!

Also, how do you keeo from mesing up the icing on the cake that you are putting on top of that one?

Put a cake circle under the cake the same size of the cake and use a spatula to pick it up.

It acts as a barrier between the two cakes. I'm not sure why or how it works LOL. Just know it does for me! Some people even use coconut but with all allergies around I wouldn't trust it. Also, it seems to me people would question why there was coconut there.

If you are having problems with getting your fingers out of the way try pushing your dowels all the way in then use tongs to pull them back up a bit then set your tier down. Gravity will push the dowels back in place and give you time to get your fingers out of the way. And the powdered sugar works fantastic at keeping the cake board from sticking to the tier below.
