I was wondering how i know what height to cut my dowels for a tiered cake and what I am suppose to use to cut them with? My first attempt at a tiered cake ended up with the layers kind of leaning I guess because my dowels weren't all the same length. It wasn't bad enough for the cake to fall over, it just wasn't as pretty as i had hoped! TIA!

Hi,

The only time you will know the height of your dowel is after you torte and ice your cakes. Insert the dowel until it reaches your cake board, make a knife scratch on the rod to mark the exact height. Pull dowel rod out. Cut all your dowels for that particular tier the exact same length, using the mark on the first one as a guide. This way the tier that goes on top of this will be level.

I just use a serrated knife to cut my wooden dowels. Others use pruning shears. HTH.

I use pruning shears to cut wooden dowels. On very small cakes, I just use bubble tea straws and cut them with a pair of scissors.
