I bought several packs of Crisco Shortening Sticks at Walmart this past Thursday... I had a cake order that I needed to have done by Monday so Sunday I mixed up my icing like normal and when it was done it tasted like metal, it really just smelt and tasted like shortening or oil that is old and was sitting for years..... The exp. date on them was July 2007 which I though was strange.... I smelled the shortening stick that I cut half off of and it had the same smell so I just associated it with the shortening... Why do you think this happened? Could it of been cause it got hot on the truck in shipping or what? I haven't a clue..... Any thoughts?

I did trash that batch and made up another that came out great, of course I used shortening I had from sevral weeks ago...

Thanks,

Cassandra

Crisco has a very rancid odor when it is bad. Sounds like it was bad when it was purchased.

I'm not sure what it is or was... It surely wasn't right... Thanks for the reply.... Remember to smell your shortening! icon_biggrin.gif

Twins--
You should have contacted Crisco and let them know. They would have asked for a batch number off of the packaging to notify the store/stores. And they certainly would have reimbursed you with coupons to replace the shortening.\\

I have done this with powdered sugar and received coupons for 3 free bags, dog food that had cat food in it--received 1 free bag and several coupons for $$ off additional purchases. Too many others to mention. I'm not a complainer but if the product is not up to standards, I pay too money to "Let it go".

Got the same problem last christmas. The smell was sooo disgusting. I did not think twice before trashing my batch away.

i agree with Mac, call the company and tell them what's happened. I've had to do this with diapers for my son. The side tab kept ripping off so I called Pampers and they took care of it.

I use the Crisco sticks all the time but I've never noticed a bad smell from them. I find them very convenient to use. You must have got a bad batch. I agree, you should contact Crisco.

I contacted Crisco and spoke with a very nice lady...She asked if I could return my remaining sticks and they would take care of the matter... I told her if I didn't know that a few others have had problems recently I would not have considered it the shortening... She said they would get back to me in a few weeks.. Which was fine with me... I went to Food Lion and purchased more shortening since I got the others from Walmart and my icing is back !!!! It tasted so good! What a big relief.... Thanks to you all !!!
