Help!!

I am trying to bake & frost a cake for my mum's birthday (my first try) and need help with some ideas.

People here do not like fondant or buttercream, so I thought of covering the cake with chocolate ganache. but what can I decorate it with? I can only pipe simple shells.

Any ideas for me???

Chocalte cakes iced with ganache really look elegant. A good way to garnish one would be to use either choclate shavings or curls, depending on what you have access to. You could also used fresh fruit, like strawberries and raspberries, that also gives a cake an elegant look.

Hello
Once you have completely covered the cake with ganache, put the left over ganache in the fridge; when it is quite cold, remove it & using your mixer whip it up. It should thicken, and then you can use it to pipe shells as a bottom border; or pipe rosettes for borders.
you could also use whipped cream to add borders and decorate (the contrast in colors will be impressive)
Another thought: have you considered chocolate fondant.... I know it is fondant, however it really does not have a fondant flavor, it has a deep chocolate flavor.
Chocolate covered fruits always impress, but here are other ideas to consider... try chocolate covered almonds or hazel nuts, all round the base of the cake, & even on the top edge (or nestled in your rosette/shell borders) OR surround the cake with Cadbury's chocolate fingers....
If you mom has a favorite candy bar (like Caramilk, or Milky Way), cut the bar into sections and use the pieces to make your bottom border; it adds a personal touch & a new flavor to the each bite.
Ok, I'll stop now... can you tell that chocolate is my favorite food?
ciao
