I have notice on a couple of the food network cake challenges that they paint on the fondant with food color. Does anyone know how they do this ?Are they using regular gel food coloring mixed with something maybe vanilla extract ? I was just wondering what they are using.

From my research on the subject most decorators that I have seen use powdered food coloring mixed with either lemon extract or some type of clear liquor such as vodka because the high alcohol content allows it to dry quickly. I have a picture of a cake that I used this technique on but if you look at it please realize it was my first attempt to do something like that and I didn't have the right liquid to mix with the powder....but hopefully I shall improve.

I use gel colours which i put a little in like a painters pallete tray and i add rosewater which dries quick but not as quick as alcohol as it doesnt evapourate as quickly... otherwise i do use it straight from the pottle sometimes with water on my brush, and have a glass of water handy for re dipping if needed. the little dragon was my first time doing it the holden emblem was a more recent one... i traced the outline and then painted it in with use above...

I just use the colors straight from the jars, I use a paint palette and water so that I can mix the colours if I need to

I was just about to start a topic on this. I want to paint mmf accents ; how long does it take to dry before I can stick to sides of cakes without messing them up?

On my bowling cake to paint the boards I just used the gels and added a bit of water and it worked, don't know if it was right but it worked. icon_cool.gif

IMHO if it worked, then it was right!!! Some of the best tips came from trying different things to net the same results.

They are the regular icing colors.

Yummy, if you use grain alcohol (sold at liquor stores) they'll dry really quickly. But I've heard it's better to put the accents on first and then paint them so you don't have to handle them at all and risk damaging the color.

I'm glad you responded saying that. I was wondering what I should do with the crab I'm making. You just answered my question!

can you use airbrush colors the same as the gel colors since they are already watered down?

does it make a difference which one you use?

Thanks

I use both gel colors mixed with a tiny bit of vodka or powders also mixed with vodka. The block cake i just did I (in m pics) is gel color with hardly any vodka. It makes a nice grain look when you don't add too much liquid. But the powder colors make a much more finished look.
