AUGH! people obviously don't see how much work you put into making a cake or cupcakes or cookies...etc.
I'm doing an order of 30 cupcakes to be delivered tonight. My sister asked how much i charged her, i told her well $30. Baseball theme cupcakes. She's like DAMN! WTH? seriously? She goes on to say, well she's not gonna come back to you for cakes. Well then so be it. I'm done. i've been doing this for a few years for free for the family. (customer is family friend).
Oh... don't give up! Just stop doing 'em for free!! ![]()
Families are the worst for expecting free or cheap deals. My family knows the work that goes into doing cakes...so they always say, "Is this what you would charge your regular customers??" Or if I quote a price, they say,"Are you sure?"
They are so great about not expecting anything for free! You just have to put your foot down and let people know (family too) that this is a business not just a hobby.
I raised prices to make it worth my while and I am so much better about realizing that if they don't want to pay it...that's fine with me if they go somewhere else. I have enough loyal ones to worry about!
Hope this helps! We've all been there! ![]()
Don't give up just beacuse of family. What I do now is to give them an 'invoice' and I add a discount if I want to and that's that. If they come back with another order then great else good ridance (sp) I could definately use my time on appreciative paying customers.
You want to express your creativity in an edible art form by creating custom cakes (or cupcakes) and you deserve to be compensated for your time and talent. ![]()
Custom made cakes (or cupcakes) cost more than mass produced baked good from Costco, Sam's Club or any mass merchandiser.
If price is the most important factor for any potential customers (family included) steer them to the mass merchandisers for a win-win scenario.
This way you can feel happy about the orders you do take, and your family (or the cash challenged) can stick to their cake budgets.
And BTW, how does your sister know the customer will find $1.00 per cupcake excessive?
HTH
I charge $1.25 each and have repeat business all the time. If anything, your price is too low...
Dont stop!!! Charge more and keep on truckin...I just had bad experience with a family member and it will go away (that feeling that you want to quit) Today I want to go at caking like nobodies business!!! So chin up girl don't worry about what anybody says and charge MORE MORE MORE ![]()

You're right... most of them don't.

I think you undercharged her! You should charged at least $1.50 per cupcake for themed cupcakes!
She's like DAMN! WTH? seriously? She goes on to say, well she's not gonna come back to you for cakes.
If she doesn't appreciate the work you do then you don't want her to come back to you!

Like everyone else said... Don't stop just because of what a family member said to you. You keep doing what you love. And if people don't like your prices then too bad... there are twice as many out there that will pay the price you ask.

Who is your sister to know how the customer will feel? I imagine you agreed with the customer on a price before you did it, right?
