I keep a basic sugar/water mix in the fridge in a sealed container for months and just add my other flvoring to a small portion when needed. It is not perishable but I would redo every 6 months or so if I had any unused.

I've had some for about a month. I didn't think it could go bad as long as it's refrigerated, but what do I know?!?!? icon_wink.gif

I was looking at this document, its from Texas A&M University, on proper food storage, and it lists syrup in their, its says 12 months in the pantry and to refrigerate for longer life.

Simple syrup is 2 parts sugar and 1 part water (or 1:1 if you like it a bit thinner), heated to boiling and then flavor added, if you desire. It is used, in a squirt bottle, to moisten cakes. It is also used to mix with cocktails, to add sweetness.

its also great to sweeten teas and lemonade, since the sugar is dissolved when it is boiled it doesn't leave the gritty sugar taste as when you add the sugar directly to the drink. I like to make it and flavor it with lemon and use it for teas.. yum icon_biggrin.gif

I also keep it for months. I have several in squeeze bottles in the fridge with different liqueur flavorings added. Saves a lot of time.

How do you use it to flavor cakes and to moisten it? Add after the cake is baked or before... I hope this is not a stupid question. Please be gentle.... lol

You use it after the cake is baked, it can help moisten a dry cake and add some flavor.
