So I started on my first purse cake yesterday. It had 4 8 x 4 layers and I used bamboo skewers, three of them to support it. Apparently it didn't support it enough because it's falling over! Thankfully I wasn't finished with it, but it's fallen so much that even my fondant has torn. icon_sad.gif I guess I'll just have to give it another shot sometime.

Sorry to hear that. Is your cake freshly baked? If you cake is freshly baked, may I suggest freezing them first before stacking them. HTH.

I do alot of purse cakes and I used to have that problem when I used box mixes - now I do scratch and use straws as support - also after icing it I stick it in the refrigerator for a bit and that helps too.

Whenever I use vertical supports, I ALWAYS drive a sharpened end into the cake board.
