Putting Ribbon Around The Bottom Of A Cake...
Decorating By chyna Updated 5 Aug 2006 , 8:18pm by campbelland
....are there tricks?
I just bought some plain probably nylon ribbon (typical department store stuff, nice, but not fancy) to go around a plain, fondant cake.
There will be flowers on the cake too
Any comments?
Do I need to do anything to the ribbon (I'm thinking grease protection, etc)
Cut wax paper to the size of your ribbon or just a bit narrower, attach the waxed paper to the cake and then attach the ribbon to the wax paper with a very tiny bit of icing at the seam, just enough for it to stick.
I also read somewhere on here where a person cut their waxed paper and then used double sided tape to attach the ribbon to the waxed paper and then attached the waxed paper/ribbon combo on the cake in one piece. If I do real ribbon again, I think I'll try that method because it sounds a little bit easier.
I just use a small amount of royal icing; no grease problems ever.
ciao
I just put my ribbon around the fondant cake and attach it together with icing or make alittle bow and put a straight pin through it that way they know the pin is there. No need to put wax paper under it when using fondant.
I use ribbon with BC frosting alot with no problems. I never have used wax paper or anything under it. I just put the ribbon on the cake before the frosting gets to crusty.
ok, my cakes aren't totally flat, it seems...the ribbon is bulging away from the cake in places and I'm not sure short of using icing, if there's any thing else I can do....
LOL, what about non-toxic gluestick?
fronklowes suggested using wax paper under the ribbon, what it u did that, then used a few straight pins to hold the wax paper to the cake? Just brain-storming here, any comments/suggestions?
Chyna, Sry I ddnt get on last night, how'd it go? Y r u reluctant to use pins? Unless you're not going to be there to serve the cake.. Well it was just a thought. The cake is probably already on it's way (gone) now but a little bt of BC on the was paper would probably work too.. I'm curious what you did, u can pm me if you want.
Does anyone have a preference towards the type of ribbon that they use?
FYI- I use the pearlized sewing pins on the back and it actually looks pretty on wedding cakes. I never use the same pin twice... it's a cheap way to make sure nothing moves around.
Are people often around to serve the wedding cakes they make?
No, I won't be there, and I don't want to put straight pins into food.
I should have used wax paper, but didnt, remembered I had a little royal in the fridge, and used that. Smaller layer has some marks on it, from the icing...bottom layer I did differently with the royal and it's fine.
Iv used the big pearl corsage pins and Iv even used scotch tape too. It was at night and the lights were dim, no one even saw it. Sandy
