I have heard so much about the Viva Paper Towel so went to the supermarket to look for them. I came home with one but it has an indent pattern "Revolutionary Ripples" all over it. Should I be able to get a plain with out any pattern or is there a slight pattern on the one you get in the US. Kleenex brand is world wide so I would like to know what I should look for. I am from New Zealand and you have so many great things there for cake decorating that we can't get here so have to purchase from you but the shipping really kills the price. I have bought several things including an Agbay leveller and a Hotwire Cutter fot cutting my dummies. Mostly our icing is done with fondant but I have read so many posts about Buttercream ( and am totally confused) I want to have a go and use the Viva paper towels also. Look forward to your help. Thanks in advance.

I bought the plain ones with no pattern at the local supermarket. I didn't notice if they also had ones with patterns so I'll have to pay attention next time to make sure I end up with the right thing. But I do know you can get them patternless..

Viva Paper Towels are totally smooth and some what thicker (in my opinion) than the others. If you can purchase a patternless paper towel that has no indents in it or color on it, it'll be just like Viva. The smooth surface allows you to get a smooth finish on your icing once it has crusted.

Hope this helps!

The Viva paper towels do have a lined (like linen?) pattern on one side that is well defined, but on the other side (the outside when it is on the roll) it has a very slight pattern that you don't see unless you look really closely at it. This is the side you want to use (I think it looks soft and fuzzy or hazy, like a picture that has been softened with a filter). If your roll has a well-defined pattern on both sides, then you might want to skip the shipping costs and just use computer paper. It will work exactly the same, you'll just have to use more pieces of paper because the grease from the buttercream will saturate the computer paper more quickly than it will saturate the Viva.

I pm'd you detailed instructions for how I ice a buttercream cake smoothly using the Viva or computer paper. I will also send you a great buttercream icing recipe.

Hi fronklowes, can you pm me the same info on Viva papertowel technique and the great buttercream icing recipe? I'm in desperate need of both. Thanks so much!

they don't Have to be Viva brand. If Kleenex sells a non patterned towel, that will work just fine. any brand will. if you are still having trouble, try using a sheet of computer paper.
