I was offered a cake decorating job today at an upscale bakery in Orange County. I was asked what my salary requirements were. I don't have a clue!!! I haven't worked outside of my home in years! What should I say?
Any opinions would be great!

I live in Houston, Texas. I worked at a bakery for a couple of months and was paid $1.35 over our minimum wage. So I was paid $6.50/hour...I'm so embarassed to admit that. icon_redface.gif

However, there are a couple things to consider here:

a) The bakery I worked for was brand new (open about 6 months).
b) It was just myself and the owner.
c) She didn't have the business flowing in yet.
d) I had never worked at a bakery before and don't have a culinary degree.

So if this is a high end and busy place you are looking at I would definitely ask for a little more. Plus you are in California so you will definitely need to ask for more that $1.35 over minimum wage.

I hope this helps you!

Hmm...I might have mis-spoke. I'm guessing you are in Orange County, Utah? But still make sure you get more than $1.35 more if they are a busy high end place.

You could also, when the topic comes up again, say "Well, with my background and knowledge of cakes and confections, what would the normal salary be?" Turn it back on them. That's what all the job hunting websites say to do.

Good Luck!

I worked in a main grocery bakery chain and was paid $8.50 per hour. That was when I was living in Florida before. They did asked me how much they should pay me and I said I'm not sure, but I did showed them my Wilton cake decorating class certifications and that's when they decided to give me $8.50 per hour instead of $6.50 because of that. You might wanna do the same.

The pay doesn't bother me at all because I want to get experience and learn everything firsthand in their bakery so I can use my experience for my future shop.

If it were me, i would figure out how much i had to have to pay my bills and then add a couple bucks to that so there is room to negotiate. icon_smile.gif

I have worked both in nice bakeries and in grocery store bakeries. I love doing both as I like doing fast paced work. In central valley California I earn $13.50 per hour and the benefits are really good. I actually find the grocery stores tend to pay more per hour than nicer bakeries but are also more demanding. I know there are bakeries in the San Francisco Bay Area who pay $20 to $22. per hour. Location living style makes a big difference. When I first started with the company I am currently with 6 years ago I told them I wouldn't work for less than $12.50 even though they normally started decorators out at $8.50. You need the experience to back yourself up and speed is definitely a biggy.
