Ok, so get your thinking caps on people, i need some help!!! my sister in law recently got married for the 2nd time. they are having a big picnic reception in her backyard next weekend and i need a cake idea. she allready had the formal wedding and reception and doesn't want a stacked cake or anything really that resembles a wedding cake. this is the kind of picnic with lots of alcohol, people in shorts and cut-off shirts and i suspect a lot of camoflauge. there will be about 120 people and i don't want to do sheet cakes.........boring! i was thinking maybe some rounds, something really neat. keep in mind, i don't cover cakes in fondant, i can use it for some accents, but don't really like to give it to people to eat. i'm a buttercream girl! lol. thanks for the help everyone!

Maybe do a picnic basket (of course basket weave on the side) with maybe grass or flowers on the side of the basket. I'm sure there are lots of pics in the gallery. You can set up your cake board to look like a picnic mat, set up two glasses and a wine bottle etc. HTH.
What about a cake decorated to look like a watermelon or a cake that looks like a cooler with beer? I did a search in the gallery on the word picnic and here's what came up:
http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&meta=search&type=full&search=picnic
Also, do a search on the word beer or anything else you may think of because there are so many cakes in the gallery that may spark an idea for you.
There was a series of cakes recently posted here that resembled a picnic. There was a picnic basket, watermelon, grill cake with bc hotdogs and hamburgers...it was very very cute. It was done for a contest.
What about a cake that reflects both of them?
I had the opportunity to do a cake for a simliar situation, did the formal wedding/reception with only about 45-50 close friends and family then had a huge (over 500 ppl) party afterwards for the rest of family and friends.
Unfortunately I was unable to do it b/c I was out of town on vacation however my idea was to do something that was all them.
The groom was a farmer and the bride was a school teacher and they were going to be moving into a family farm so I wanted to do two tiers for the center piece cake. The bottom a field with tractors/crops/animals and then the top tier with an old school house for the topper (no bride groom) but it would have been so them! I am so disspointed I didn't get to do it and still think about doing a cake simliar just to say I did it (maybe dummy cakes someday)
Hi, I just wanted to know if you ever did the picnic cake? I was out of town when you posted and just came across your thread today. I had a similar request from my sister-in-law, except it was for an engagement picnic. She really wanted a heart shaped cake with a picnic theme so I came up with something she loved. It's in my photos. I'de love to see what you came up with! Thanks!
I did a Picnic Scene cake for a bridal shower. It reminded me of an old fashioned picnic scene, With the planket and basket and so on. It was a sheet cake not your ordinary sheet cake.
I tried to upload it but It's too big. You can see it in my pictures.
But I think a picnic basket or a Cooler is a great Idea. It could be filled with stuff like food for the basket and Beer and Pop for the Cooler. It's not too hard to make things out on fondant it's just like using playdough.
Good Luck
