I heard about this on the radio this morning. Cakerental.com. The djs on the radio were talking about what a great idea this was because cake prices were so astronomical. I was thinking, this is a terrible idea. It will put pro cake decorators out of business, especially small ones.

The site is in her post. I agree - terrible idea! Chances are the cake is gonna get damaged in all that transit and then the bride will be out her cost and the deposit... $300... and that combined with her sheets she probably could have gotten a real cake! Some of those designs are pretty lumpy too...

Are we talking about dummy cakes? See there was a whole article in the paper about a lady starting that here. What I think people are forgetting is that you have to pay for hte rental right. Then you still have to pay for the sheet cakes to feed the guests. I just dont think in most situations this is going to be saving you a lot of money.

The lady that is doing it near me charges i thin 100 for a 3 tier cake in stock and 150 for a custom design. (then she gets the cake back). But then the bride and groom will still have to pay 1-2 a slice for the kitchen cakes. I have to ask if they really saved themselves a lot of money.

Merissa, I'm curious if you feel threatened by that business being so close to you. As jstritt (the original poster) said: " It will put pro cake decorators out of business, especially small ones."

Well I dont know. I dont really do a lot of cakes at this point. I dont really have a business right now. I think though that once the brides sit down and start figuring costs they might feel differently. I mean why pay for a dummy and sheet cakes?? The cost of both probably is about the same as just paying for cake.
