I have read the tutorial on this & it seems wasteful, & messy. Those of you who do this cakes, is that the way you do it. It looks to be more stable, Can you not do just like a wedding cake only put a dowel all the way thru as you stack, ( Put bottom & Middle layers togather & dowel all the way thur & then top & dowel thur all 3). Its just a thought. I see lots of these on here, so was just wondering if you all follow the tutorial. I have a couple of Collete Peters books & it doesn't look like she does it that way.
Colette does it differently. She uses styrofoam wedges to get the illusion of tilt. Her cakes also do not have slated sides on those.
The cakes on the topsy turvy tutorial sit flat. If you want less cake waste, you can use the round cake you hollow out from the bigger tier as the bottom layer of the smaller tier (just make sure to cut the round piece out first before carving the slant). I've done it this way.
Or better yet, just use the scraps to make the very popular cake balls ![]()
I made one (in my avatar) using the article here only I didn't do the supports like it showed.....I hollowed out the circle in the cakes and everything but I just dowelled my bottom cake layer and then put the top layer on a board and stuck a central dowel through the whole thing....mine was MORE than sturdy!!! It travelled all over the place with different people (non cake people too ......and you know how THEY handle cakes lol) and it never budged, it stayed exactlly how I made it!
I have not yet tried one of these cakes but it is on my list of ones to make. I love how htey look and would like to know the best way to make one as well. I have found a different way of making it at the following link: http://www.cakescanada.com/HowTo/tiltedcake.html post a picture when you have one finished

I just made my first whimsy (orange, blue and white in my pics) and followed the tutorial here but doweled/supported like KHalstead-love your cake btw!) and I didn't feel like there was alot of waste. I only went down about 1 1/2 in into the tier below to sink it. I am in love with these cakes and dying to make another one!
