What is the best icing to use to decorate fondant? Does royal icing work well with fondant?

Royal works extremely well or you can also mix the fondant well with a little water to get a piping consistency and use this

I've always used buttercream and I think it works great!

Hello.
Both buttercream and royal icing are great for decorating on fondant. As to which is best: opinions will be varied and very subjective.
I have used both and find that both look equally beautiful.
I make my decision based on the client, type of cake & who will potentially be eating the cake. Typically for a wedding cake, I would use royal icing (for some, traditionally, it is expected to be royal icing). Also, if part of the function of the icing is to 'hold things together' as well as to look pretty, I opt for royal icing.

For birthday or other ocassion cakes , I typically use buttercream;

Except for kids, I find that people just don't eat the royal icing anyway. They push it to the side or eat around it.
ciao
