I have been looking at your beautiful cakes and reading all of your wonderful posts for a couple of weeks now. This is my first post, and I am a suuuppper newbie to cake decorating. Until I started reading here I used undoctored cake mixes and can frosting ( hangs head in shame lol ) I LOVE looking at beautifully decorated cakes, and usually order from bakeries for my children's birthdays, but I really want to learn how to make a decent cake on my own. Well today is my husband's birthday, and I decided to take the recipe for the crusting cream cheese frosting to the store and try it out. We both could not believe how good it was! and instantly vowed to never buy the canned stuff again lol I also tryed out the VIVA method, and got the smoothest frosting of my life on the first try with zero skills lol Now my cake would still make most of you cringe lol but for me it was a big accomplishment and I learned it all just from browsing around here at CC. I just wanted to say thanks for showing me the way lol

Welcome!! I'm sure your cake looked just fine. You should have seen some of my first cakes, it did not take long to get the hang of it and I still have some off days. You get some wonderful ideas from this site. I made a cake yesterday to take to a birthday party, it was milk chocolate cake filled with cookies and cream filling, and iced in butter cream dream. My SIL asked me how do you come up with this stuff and I said Cake Central Baby!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I second that! I too am very new at cake decorating and have to thank the cake central members for all of their inspiration and helpful information! I do have a question though. How can I find out what all of these acronyms mean (ie, VIVA; MMF - I think that stands for marshmallow fondant; etc)? I'm already addicted to this site and love looking at all of the great cakes! Thanks to all of you!

Welcome. I have done cakes for years, but need fine tuning and am trying to do something new each time. I am doing my first fondant tomorrow, using the recipe from this site. It is for my adopted granddaughter so it is important to me. Little ones are rare in our family so have to do good icon_biggrin.gif Not that she will care. Only the NeNe does. We will see what happens. Again welcome, hope you visit the site as often as I do.

Viva is not an acronym, it is a name brand of soft, strong, textureless paper towels. A very, very useful, and indispensible in my opinion, tool for cake decorating. It is used for creating a faux fondant finish on frosting.

Enjoy!

I am also new, and already I have learned so much. Just tried the MMF recipe - easy to work with, doesn't smell like the bought stuff (I didn't taste it), and much easier than having to run to the baking supply store to get it (or sending DH to get it!!). also followed instructions for BC roses - I never made one yet that even looked like a rose, and these came out beautiful on the first try. I have also tried out many techniques that I saw on this site, and I'm getting better. Can't wait to try them out on a real cake later this week!!
Thanx a ton to all the friendly, helpful people at CC!! icon_biggrin.gificon_smile.gificon_biggrin.gificon_smile.gif

(I'm not so sure my DH agrees, as I'm always on the computer, I can't stop looking at all your cakes LOL)

I am new to decorating as well. I decorated my first cake about 6 months ago, just something I saw in a book at walmart and thought to myself...Why Not!!! I'm always looking for something to let me get creative. I haven't had any classes, I found this site a couple weeks ago and I have already learned so much by reading other ppls posts. I can't believe how addicting this site is!!! I want to thank everyone for posting advice and sharing so many pictures of beautiful and creative cakes, it makes me want to work even harder to make my cakes just as great.
