I have two questions:

1. Explain to me how you paint on fondant....

2. when you do fondant pearls do you brush the luster dust on dry or mix it with extract?

Thanks in advance for your help

When I paint on fondant I just take my colors or luster dusts and mix them with alcohol (some use lemon extract) and paint it on where I need it to go. For the sun on the sun and moon cake I did I painted the yellow on all over, then went back over parts of it with the orange.

When doing pearls I roll them into balls and let them set for a bit, 20 to 30 mins, so they aren't as soft. I think put a small amount of (dry) pearl dust in a small bowl, drop some in then shake them around.

I think that Marina Sousa, on a Wedding Cake Challenge, said that she does that with her pearls too. If you want a matte pearl, you just use the luster dust dry to shake. But, if you want a shiny pearl, you drop in a drop or two of alcohol. She said that then they come out shiny. I believe this is correct...anyone correct me if I'm wrong! Good luck! icon_biggrin.gif

If I am painting on fondant I just water done some wilton gel colors and go to town. For luster dust I use a clear extract. You can paint with buttercream as well.....hope that helps! icon_smile.gif

I've painted in fondant a couple of times and I dissolve regular food coloring gel (wilton) in a little bit of vodka. You can get your colors as transparent or as intense as you wish, like if you were painting with watercolors.

For pearls I rolled them and drop each one inside my luster dust container, then carefully take them out with a little spoon.
You can also apply the luster dust "in wet" by combining it with vodka.

Wilton also has a product called "brush on color", you can use it directly over the fondant.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I just made fondant pearls for the first time..... I took a tip and used the wide end to cut out the fondant, rolled them & put the luster dust in a plastic bag with the fondant balls and shook. I think they came out pretty good.

I appreciate everyone's help

Yes sorry. The color gels or pastes. icon_smile.gif You could use the powders as well.
