Sorry if you think this is a silly question, I was wondering when do you use the impression mat, when you roll your fondant ot when is already on the cake??

Thanks!

I've never used one, personally, but I would do it after the fondant is on the cake because the fondant is sure to stretch during smoothing. Although, the stretched impression could be neat, depending on what kind of look you're going for. HTH

If I bake at night to decorate in the morning I have been known to stick them in a cold oven, I won't even wrap in plastic. Works wonders, keeps them moist, out of sight.

When i purchased one, they told me to do it before i put it on the cake, because if you do it on the cake, you might smash the cake. i never tried yet, though. good luck.

I need to know too as I've just purchased some and they look great on the cakes I've seen in the galleries.

I thought about using them before putting the fondant on, but they would stretch, wouldn't they?

But if you use them on the fondant already on the cake, wouldn't that leave indents on the top of the sides of the cake?

Hello Newbie's,

I took a fondant class and the instructor told us to place the fondant on the cake first, smooth it and then use the impression mat to make our design. Because with the smoothing disfigure the design.
