I've never tried store-bought frosting, but am wondering if it might be worth a try....what's everyone's favorite brand of storebought frosting? Or am I better off just sticking with my favorite homemade recipe?

shhhh......
don't tell anyone....
but I love the DH white chocolate chocolate frosting.

that being said...to decorate with, store-bought is TOO soft as is....so I either:
blend it w/ homemade buttercream
or
put in KA and add extra powdered sugar to stiffen it up.

I personally do not like store-bought frosting (except for maybe the fluffy white, I think this is what it is called). You can't decorate with it because it is too soft.

I beg of you..............

Don't do it!!!!! Keep making it yourself!

Although if hard-pressed, I remember my favorite growing up was a caramelly-coconutty-pecan kind of frosting. Does anyone remember what flavor that's called?

Actually, the only reason I was considering the frosting is because I am in desperate need for a very simple vanilla filling for my orange creamsicle cake. I really want to come as close as I can to the flavor of an orange creamsicle icecream bar, and have not come across a homemade recipe that would suit this purpose. Any recommendations?

Simple Vanilla filling? Why not the Snack Cup puddings, Vanilla Flavor? That's all I use for fillings.

maybe what doug suggested by adding some psugar to it i the KA.....or mix it with some buttercream.....just by itself its too thin and absorbs into the cake too much if you ask me

I personally could sit and eat the betty crocker milk chocolate can with nothing but my finger!! ...and Im not even crazy about chocolate!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

what about that twinkie filling stuff Ive seen others use around here? maybe that would work

I think orange cream mousse with mandarin oranges would be a great filling for your orange creamsicle cake. Get a box of orange cream instant pudding, whip with 1 pint of heavy cream until mousse-y. Fold in well drained mandarin oranges. This filling tastes just like a creamsicle. Another option would be to make french vanilla mousse using french vanilla instant pudding with 1 pint of heavy cream until whipped. M-m-m-m-m! thumbs_up.gif

I have also mixed the DH frosting with homemade buttercream, but only used it for the filling. I just bought the Wilton chocolate but haven't tried it yet.
