I am new to this website, and I can tell there are alot of you that really know your cakes. I need some feedback on something. I just received a phone call the other day, from a lady who is getting vendors together for a cake tasting and looking at cakes, for a possible wedding cake. My question is how do I do this. I am just an amatuer cake decorator, who has done mostly birthday cakes and baby shower cakes. I have only done a wedding anniversary cake that looked like a wedding cake, and I have done one actual wedding cake. It wasn't anything fancy. I am just wandering what all you are supposed to do at something like this. Please help. I love doing cakes so much, and would love to be able to do wedding cakes more frequently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and God Bless...
I have never done tastings. I use to do Wedding Cakes (long ago) and want to begin again. Back then, I only got orders from people that had already seen/tasted one of my cakes. So, I never HAD to do a tasting. But, from what I have gathered from this sight...many people make cupcakes in different flavors or have a bride pick a couple of the flavors she wants to try. You can't possibly bake all the flavors you offer. I'm bumping this post in hopes that you get more help.... Good luck!
Here is a pic of my sample cakes: http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=248913
I bake a 6" square and cut it in half, giving me two 3x6 cakes, that I tort and quickly ice using a star tip. The sample cakes are to sample the taste, not to display the skill .... that's what my pics are for.
Dont' make too many flavors. This is information overload and actually confuses the bride. My lemon cake will taste just as good as my white cake except it will taste like lemon. The reason I offer two white cakes with two different fillings is to illustrate how a filling can make a difference in the same cake.
When you say this person is getting vendors-plural together for a cake tasting, are there going to be other cakes there also? Is this a bridal show for multiple brides or a private tasting for one couple? ![]()

From what I gathered it will be for one couple with a couple of other vendors who will have their cakes too. This is all new for me, but I am hoping it will be a foot in the door for something different for me to try. Thank you so much for replying so quickly, and for your great advice.
I am new to this website also. I may make my daughters wedding cake and there has been so much wonderful info here.
Regarding the Cake tasting - this is what happened to us. The Cake Co. offered us a "tasting" of two cakes for $20.00. My daughter made two selections and she was given two 4" cakes - one in each flavor. We picked them up and tasted them at home. They were frosted with a simple buttercream but not decorated of course.
We didn't care for the cakes and I have done some cake decorating so I am now having cake tastings in my family. The first one - white cake with passion fruit curd was a winner. I just don't know if I can do THE Wedding Cake.
I was very happy to pay the Cake Co for the two samples. Some people may do this for free but I felt the fee was nominal - just sorry we didn't love the cake.
