I am fairly new to cake decorating and I have never used gumpaste. I have my first wedding cake to do for a friend in September and she wants edible roses on the cake. My question is should I use MMF for the roses or 50/50? I don't know anything about the 50/50 but from what I understand it holds up better, if so is it still considered edible, and how do I make it? Any advice that you could give me would be greatly appreciated. icon_smile.gif

I'm not sure of the exact 50/50 definition but I understand it to be half fondant half gumpaste! I've done that and it works just fine. I have not had any luck working with just gumpaste. It dries out so quickly. Mixing it with fondant buys me a bit more time and still dries quickly. I have heard this mixture called pastillage!

Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

50/50 or not it is always edible.. I do 50/50/ all the time because I like it that way. The roses in my photos (Pink and White and Orange and Pink) are all edible. I like the texture of Fondant and the strenght of gumpaste. My suggestion, do it as far ahead of time as you can..
Even if the wedding is in December or November, you can really do them now. They do not got bad .. The longer they dry, the better and stronger they get

Thanks for the replies! Prettycake, I was actually looking at your flowers earlier today, I think I saved them to my favorites for future reference. I was actually planning on starting them this weekend since I also have to to decorations for a poker themed grooms cake as well.

Cakemommy, I will probably need a little extra time as well. Thanks for the tips. I was unsure of the taste, what do you think?

EHHHHH! The taste is kind of so so. If you use MMF it would improve the taste tremendously! Some people might not even eat the flowers!
