I've noticed on a couple of pictures from you great decorators...that you pipe for example swirls with royal icing and they are already gold or silver. When I have to do that I have to pipe in with RI and then paint it with luster dust. Which is annoying cause it takes forever...I was wondering....is there any way you can actually add luster dust to RI or any other dust....and if so how would I add it?? Do I add alcohol too?? If anyone can help me out will truly appreciate it!!

Try this recipe--it works fantastic and it does dry "to the touch" after a awhile (just not hard like royal):

Luster piping

2 teaspoons 10X sugar
2 teaspoons Luster Dust
clear alcohol (gin or vodka or lemon extract)
1 teaspoon piping gel

Mix the sugar and luster dust. Add a few drops of alcohol and mix to make a stiff paste. Add piping gel, a little at a time, until a piping consistency is reached. It is much easier piping if you use a tip 1 or 2.

I piped the silver hearts on this cake using the recipe: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_409603.html

I have read that you can mix in luster dust to RI. I haven't tried it so I'm not 100% certain how to do it or if it turns out as nice as painting it on. I'm curious to see if the color is as intense. I hope we get someone who has actually done it to respond I would love to know.
