I'm planning on making a baptism cake in a few weeks similar to this one (which is gorgeous, by the way). I'm in need of a little instruction on how to make the plaques on the front of the cake. Are these usually made from dried fondant/gumpaste? Is the writing done with a food marker?
I would also like some color advice. She wants dark choc. bc icing with blue and white accents. I was planning on making the cross ivory & the roses blue. What color should I m make the streamers (ivory)?
Thanks!!

That plaque looks to me like an oval piece of fondant/gumpaste with a small shell border. The writing on it could have been done either with an edible image or manually written with a food marker. My bet is with a food marker. If you will be using food markers, it is advisable to have the fondant/gumpaste dry so you will get better handwriting strokes.
If you're using light blue, I'd have the cross ivory, ivory roses with blue centers (graduated), blue streamers, white plaque with blue or brown writing.
If the cross is ivory and the roses blue, what if you did streamers in both colors to tie the two together?
I would get some colored pencils and draw the idea in the colors you are thinking of then you can see if you like how they flow on the design.
HTH!
Thanks for the ideas. I'll try to dry them on the cakes pans to contour, then write on them with either markers or RI. She wants everything possible to be edible. I finally talked her out of bc roses. I told her that fondant roses would look so much nicer, & she could eat them if she insisted!! I thought about making the plaques out of choc, but I didn't think it would be as easy as the fondant/gumpaste. She wants the roses to be blue. I don't like the color combo. myself, but it's not my cake. She also wants the choc. bc to be as dark as possible. I'm kind of nervous about the cake b/c I've never really made a choc. decorated cake before.
Thanks!
