When I make roses they always seems to get ragged looking edges. Any hints on what I can do to get them to come out smooth?

I would have to say that your frosting is to thick ...

Yes your frosting probably needs to be thinned out a little.

I have had the same exact problem with mine forever.....usually it's the consistancy. Try thinning just a little bit, and you can also use corn syrup to thin it, which will add a little elasticity to it. I also noticed that if my icing is super stiff, I can still make them, but make each pedal SLOWLY as moving too quickly causes it to crack and look rough on the edges.

Don't do it too thin or your roses will droop and collapse into itself on you!!! icon_smile.gif Make it somewhere between a medium and stiff consistancy.

I have the same problem with rough edges. Even when I thinned it out (with water) the edges were still rough and they rose got droopy. so frustrating!!!!!!! icon_cry.gif Perhaps I will try corn syrup next time - thanks for the tip.

Thank you thank you! I made roses for the first time in months and had the same trouble. I actually got out my Wilton books again and looked up the whole process to see what I was doing wrong!

If you think your icing isn't too thick, check your tip. There may be a bit if icing clogging the tip, causing the petals to look ragged.

I'm with SQ cakes - if corn syrup doesn't work, check your tip. Even if it's not clogged, you can use the pointy end of your flower nail to pry the narrow end open just a tiny bit. It should help a little, hopefully enough.
