Hi. Im just getting started with cake decorating and I am wondering which are the best tools to buy? I live in AUstralia but there are some places that you can buy wilton's etc.. This is easiest b/c most people here tend to use their stuff and it makes following instructions easier. On of my main problems is finding classes to attend. THey are very expensive - around 375 dollars for less than 8 hours instruction. They are mostly held at the equivalent of community colleges or professional catering schools. I have thought about buying a wilton course 1 kit, with instruction and maybe a Wilton's instruction video I found on AMAZON? Is this a good idea?
As far as tools to buy, I would say it depends on the design you want to make - usually the books, videos, etc. will tell you what you need to make the cakes they teach you.... so I guess I would say yeah, go for the books and videos. Although they may not be as good as a person right there, they are very informational!! Good luck and welcome to CC. ![]()
A caddy with some tip that are included would work for some supplies and they are also nice to keep your things in. If you get a 50 piece one it includes tips #2, 3, 5, 7, 12, 16, 18, 21, 32, 47, 67, 352, 101, 103, 104, 233, 225, 133, and 2D. It also has a tip brush, decorating brush, flower nail, couplers, disposable bags, angled spatula, four colors for frosting, practice board with stant, and Cake Decorating Beginners Guide.
You can buy it through the Wilton 2007 Yearbook.
If I were you I would decide what cake I wanted to make and get the tools needed for that one cake. then add to your tool collection each time you want to make a cake which needs something extra. That way you never have a load of tools you bought enthusiastically at the start and find you never use. I bought a set of icing tips and only use two of them...
